at the Tapping Reeve Meadow
Bringing the Nation’s First Oval Office to the Northwest Corner
2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation. To commemorate this milestone, on October 3 the Litchfield Historical Society will host the Museum of the American Revolution’s First Oval Office Project at the Tapping Reeve Meadow. Developed with Colonial Williamsburg, the center piece of the First Oval Office Project is a hand-stitched replica of George Washington’s Revolutionary War Tent–the mobile headquarters and
command center of the Continental Army.
Pitched alongside other replica tents, camp equipage, and furnishings, and staffed with costumed interpreters, the First Oval Office Project is a unique educational experience where visitors explore the encampment through immersive programming. They can try out replica equipment, tools, and uniforms. And, they are invited to engage with living history interpreters who bring to life the stories of the diverse people and complex events surrounding the Revolutionary War.
As the First Oval Office Project’s only stop in Connecticut in 2026, we are working to maximize access to this one-of-a-kind event. Our Family Day on October 3rd will be a low-cost community event, welcoming families and
individuals from across the Northwest Corner. Visitors will explore the First Oval Office Project while commemorating the first 250 years of our nation and reflecting on the meaning of the Declaration of Independence.
